How CBD Helps With Pain Management
According to research conducted by the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies over 100 million Americans live with chronic pain. 1 in every 5 Americans suffers from chronic pain. Chronic pain is a devastating condition to be diagnosed with. Not only does chronic pain reduce one's quality of life, but it also leads to high medical costs and reduced productivity at work.
CBD oil has
grown in popularity amongst people suffering from chronic pain. CBD oil is also
referred to as cannabidiol. It is viewed as a natural approach to pain relief.
CBD is a chemical compound that is found in marijuana and hemp plants. CBD
belongs to the class cannabinoids. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, which also
belongs to the same class and is commonly referred to as THC, CBD doesn't cause
euphoric effects. CBD doesn't affect the same receptors as THC.
Even though
there are numerous claims that the use of cannabidiol helps to relieve pain,
more scientific research is required to prove its safety and effectiveness.
Until recently, researchers didn't have access to marijuana and hemp plants
since cannabis is a Schedule 1 drug.
The human
body's endocannabinoid system is usually involved in maintaining various
aspects of the body's health. It helps to regulate memory, sleep, mood, immune
system responses, and pain. This system usually produces its own cannabinoids.
CBD works by attaching to the endocannabinoid receptors. It influences the body
to utilize its own cannabinoids more effectively causing complex results. THC,
on the other hand, affects the brain's endocannabinoid receptors activating the
brain's reward system which produces 'feel good' chemicals such as dopamine.

How CBD Helps With Chronic Pain
Researchers
indicate that CBD affects receptors in the brain and the immune systems.
Receptors receive chemical signals from different stimuli and help the cells
respond. By attaching to these receptors, CBD helps create anti-inflammatory
and painkilling effects which ultimately help with pain management. CBD has
been shown to be very beneficial to people suffering from various types of
chronic pain.
People who
wish to avoid risky and addictive medications such as opioids. Research has
shown that patients who utilize CBD to relieve pain do not build up a tolerance
to the effects of the compound, hence, do not need to continually increase
their dosage.
However,
CBD products aren't approved by the FDA for any medical condition, therefore,
they aren't regulated for purity, safety and dosage like other medical drugs.
CBD For
Arthritis Pain
A study was
conducted in 2016 to investigate the use of CBD in rats with arthritis. The
researchers applied a gel containing CBD to the rats for days. They continually
increased the amount applied to the rats with each day. By the end of the
experiment, the researchers found that inflammation and pain in the rats'
joints had drastically reduced. What's more, there were no notable side
effects.
CBD oil may
hold relief for people with arthritis pain. However, more studies and research
needs to be conducted on human subjects in order to verify the findings from
the initial experiment with the rats.
