Back pains
are amongst the most common health conditions. It is estimated that over 80% of
the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Lower
back pains are usually caused a number of factors such as injuries, ageing and
sedentary lifestyles. Not only do chronic back pains affect one's quality of
life, but they also undermine one's ability to perform daily tasks. Back pains
can also affect one's productivity at work and hampering progress in career
life.
Basically,
back pain is usually classified as acute back pain or chronic back pain. Acute
back pain is the type that is easily resolved after taking a rest or treatment
while chronic back pain lasts for more than 12 weeks. It is reported that over
20% of the people with back pains usually have chronic back pains. If you are
suffering from back pain, then your doctor has most probably recommended
surgery or medications in order to alleviate your pain.
However, these options are known to have serious side effects and can damage your body. Research is now being conducted into how CBD can be used for back pain. CBD is one of the two most functional compounds found in cannabis plants. It is one of the over 120 cannabinoids found in hemp and marijuana plants. However, unlike THC, which is the main psychoactive compound found in marijuana, CBD doesn't give you a high sensation. Both compounds usually interact with the endocannabinoid system, however, they have very different effects.

Both have
many of the same health benefits but THC causes euphoric effects. People who
wish to gain the medical benefits without the high make use of CBD. The hemp
plant contains more CBD and is used to produce the highest quality products
that have 0.3% less than THC.
Research
has found that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a potential
candidate as the alternative method of managing back pain. Even though CBD may
not necessarily be a cure for back pain, it usually provides significant relief
for the discomfort.
CBD For
Chronic Back Pain
A study
conducted in 2012 found that CBD was effective in suppressing inflammatory and
neuropathic chronic pain in mice. CBD suppresses the body's inflammatory
response and accompanying symptoms by binding with certain receptors. The
interaction of CBD with these receptors usually regulates the production of
various cell types that are usually involved in inflammatory responses. Cell
types including T-helper cells, T-regulatory cells, and pro-inflammatory
cytokines are usually involved with inflammatory responses.
CBD usually
interferes with the amount of inflammatory cells by decreasing the production
of some, killing off others and increasing the production of others.
The
anti-inflammatory properties of CBD suggest that it could be an effective
method of managing chronic back pain. Studies were conducted on patients who
didn't respond to back surgery and it was found that the cannabinoids, THC and
CBD helped to significantly reduce the pain experienced by the patients. There
were also minimal to no side effects noted. It is also suggested that CBD
doesn't react with other medications used for back pain.
